The eSkills Malta Foundation will be integrated into the Malta Digital Innovation Authority

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTRY FOR THE ECONOMY, ENTERPRISE, AND STRATEGIC PROJECTS

From January 2025, the functions of the eSkills Malta Foundation will be incorporated into the structures of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA). This integration will help optimise resources and consolidate the digital innovation ecosystem in Malta.

Through this integration, digital skills programmes, reskilling and upskilling initiatives maybe implemented more holistically. The MDIA will continue to implement the successful mandate and initiatives of the eSkills Malta Foundation, but as part of a broader strategy that also includes the work of DiHubMT. This approach will more effectively address the industry’s needs for digital skills. Since eSkills is a foundation formed by the Government and the Chamber of Commerce, this decision was made following discussions and approval from the Chamber of Commerce.

This integration offers a strategic opportunity to enhance the efficiency and coordination of efforts in developing digital skills in Malta, particularly in light of the growing importance of AI literacy as encouraged by the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, where the MDIA has a primary role in Malta.

By integrating the development of digital skills into the MDIA’s mandate, there is potential to directly align digital literacy and competence-building initiatives with Malta’s digital innovation agenda.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, stated, “This integration is an important step to consolidate our efforts in digital skills development and innovation in Malta. Through the MDIA, we ensure greater synergy and coordination, which not only strengthens the competitiveness of our digital economy but also positions Malta as a leader in AI literacy and digital skills. This is a crucial step to address the industry’s needs and help Maltese workers adapt to the challenges and opportunities brought by digital technology.”

MDIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Kenneth Brincat, remarked, “This integration will further strengthen Malta’s digital skills ecosystem, allowing us to offer practical solutions to real challenges faced by businesses and society.”

eSkills Malta Foundation’s Chief Administrator, Mr Carmel Cachia, noted, “The continuity of the existing successful initiatives and work of the eSkills Malta Foundation, which has paved the way for greater digital skills among Maltese citizens, will be ensured while being integrated into MDIA’s strategic framework to build further on this strong foundation.”

Ultimately, this integration presents an opportunity to ensure that digital skills development remains a priority on the country’s economic agenda. The MDIA, with these functions, will have a central role in ensuring that Malta’s workforce possesses the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.

The integration will take effect on 1st January 2025, and any correspondence or inquiries should be directed to the email address [email protected] or via telephone at 21828800.
