PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTRY FOR THE ECONOMY, EUROPEAN FUNDS AND LANDS
This upcoming summer, a Summer School and a Summer Camp will be organised to provide students with an interactive learning experience focusing on key principles of innovative technology. This initiative was announced by the Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands, Silvio Schembri.
The Summer School, called Future Innovators, will take place at MCAST in Paola between July and September for students aged 13-15. Among other activities, it will help students develop creative skills in Artificial Intelligence and digital innovation, covering topics such as coding, blockchain, metaverse, 3D printing and cybersecurity.
The Summer Camp, titled xPloring Intelligence – A Bootcamp on Us and Tech, will be held at the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta from September 11th to 15th for students in Year 7 to Year 9. This Summer Camp aims to inspire students to choose technology-related subjects.
Additionally, a comic book was launched today and will be distributed to all students from Year 9 to Year 11 studying Computing or VET IT in Maltese and Gozitan schools.
Minister Silvio Schembri expressed gratitude to the three entities within the Ministry – MDIA, Tech.mt and eSkills – for collaborating on these initiatives, as well as to MCAST and the University of Malta. “This is how we work together for the benefit of our country and our children. We know that technology and the digital world are the future and through these initiatives, we are nurturing a passion for these sciences in our children,” said Minister Schembri.
Minister Schembri also referenced the European Union’s adoption of the MiCA law on virtual financial assets (blockchain and cryptocurrency). “Malta was the first jurisdiction to create a regulatory framework for virtual assets. At the time, many did not understand the importance of this law, but today our country serves as a model for its practical implementation. We now have a six-year advantage over other countries, making us leaders in this field,” said Minister Silvio Schembri.
Kenneth Brincat, CEO of MDIA, remarked, “Innovative technology is changing the way we work and operate, and MDIA’s interest is to ensure that technology is adopted safely for society’s benefit. To achieve this, we must start from an early age. At MDIA, we believe that through collaboration, we can find new ways to educate children and youth on the safe use of innovative technology,” said Mr. Brincat.
