Valletta has seen a rapid increase in tourism, impacting the well-being of its residents and straining urban heritage: in 2022 Valletta had less than 6’000 residents, while welcoming the majority of Malta’s 2’286’597 visitors (NSO Malta, 2022). By leveraging AI-driven solutions, we seek to address these challenges.

The project is characterized by the establishment of a professional media recording studio within the faculty of ICT that will incorporate innovative digital pedagogies including VR, AR, audiovisual cloning technology with the ultimate objective to design, develop and author cinema-quality professional e-learning content. This will bring together AI research academics and their students working in image processing, voice synthesis, audiovisual cloning, digital pedagogies and deep machine learning within the same AI department. Furthermore, the AI department will be closely collaborating with a local company called CourseClout who has extensive experience in audiovisual cloning for educational purposes.

Malta to navigate the complex ethical landscape of emerging artificial intelligence
(AI) technologies. Building on an extensive systematic literature review of AI ethics
across multiple sectors, this project will delve deeper into the unique challenges and
opportunities facing Malta in the coming years. MaECIn will proactively identify
emerging AI trends and applications with a direct impact on Malta’s society,
economy, and governance. By conducting rigorous horizon scanning and ethical
forecasting, the project will anticipate potential ethical dilemmas and risks
associated with these technologies.

This project aims to use AI to enhance the Planning Authority’s (PA) process of updating Malta’s national basemap. It will focus on detecting changes in building boundaries between 2018 and 2024 high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery using AI computer vision techniques. The project will address challenges such as shadow removal and object detection/classification to improve the accuracy and efficiency of basemap updates.

AiGaDe aims to develop and disseminate a new experimental game to be used
for research and education, an experimental videogame titled HAMM-3R. This
game will be designed to showcase innovative uses of AI in game development,
serving as a benchmark for research projects and publications in fields like
game studies and procedural content generation. The game (and related
interactive website and online sources) will be free to use and access, and will
be designed to function as an accessible educational tool upon launch.
