The Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands, Silvio Schembri, announced six projects in various sectors that will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve people’s lives.
These six projects are part of the National AI Strategy. To support their implementation, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) will allocate over €4 million.
The projects will address sectors such as transport, energy, healthcare, education, tourism and public services through servizz.gov.
Minister Silvio Schembri explained that, through the National AI Strategy, Malta aims to become a hub where local and international companies and entrepreneurs can develop, test and scale AI systems, while showcasing the value of their innovations in a country ready to adopt this technology.
During the press conference, details of the six projects were shared:
- Transport Project:
A collaboration with Transport Malta will integrate traffic lights, CCTVs, and road message display panels into a unified system. The collected and analysed data will optimise traffic management and provide real-time updates on platforms like Google Maps. The MDIA will invest €1.9 million in this project.
- Energy Project:
Enemalta, the Water Services Corporation and ARMS will combine efforts using AI algorithms to collect, organise and analyse current data on water and electricity usage. This will help maximise resources, provide real-time responses to clients and identify system issues before they occur, promoting efficiency. The MDIA will allocate nearly €380,000 for this initiative.
- Public Service Chatbot:
In collaboration with servizz.gov, a chatbot will be developed to complement traditional services like email, mobile apps and freephone lines, enhancing consumer accessibility. This project will receive €590,000 from the MDIA.
- Education Sector:
An adaptive system will be created to help students achieve better education outcomes through personalised programmes tailored to their performance, ambitions, and skills. The MDIA has dedicated €150,000 to this project.
- Healthcare Sector:
Working with the Central Procurement and Supplies Unit, AI will be used to develop a forecasting application. This tool will assist in planning expenses, procurement processes and order management. The MDIA has allocated €300,000 for this initiative.
- Tourism Sector:
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) will use AI to create tourist personas based on psychological traits, interests and lifestyles, combined with demographic data. This will allow a deeper understanding of trends and prospects in the tourism sector. This project will benefit from €800,000 in financial assistance from the MDIA.
Minister Silvio Schembri thanked the MDIA for its efforts in implementing the National AI Strategy and initiating these projects. He also expressed gratitude to the entities collaborating on these initiatives.
